Rick
Rick is a retired math professor (algebraic geometry) and erstwhile chess master. He has lived in Montreal, Paris and India, and now divides his time between Mexico and PEI. Rick is an introvert who likes peace and quiet, so that he can think about math. He also likes classical and romantic music. Rick bought the property in 2017, after visiting the island several times with his friend Vera, and Sneakers the Wonderdog. He likes PEI because it reminds him of the Oregon coast, where his parents enjoyed spending time by the ocean. Sharing the land with like-minded people appeals to both Rick and Vera. Although he spends most of his time now in Charlottetown, you may still meet him while here, depending on the dates. |
Vera
Vera is a certified teacher, licensed pilot and parent of monozygotic twins. As of April 2023, she is also a licensed marriage commissioner on PEI. She divides her time between Toronto and St Peter's Harbour. (and more recently, Guayabitos!) Vera is a part owner of the property, and the main point of contact for most guests. In her spare time, Vera volunteers with new Canadians and administrates a number of Facebook groups in Canada and Mexico. She also plays drums and xylophone, and is learning to play the trombone and the fiddle. You may hear her practising periodically in the music cabin near the back of the property. (Don't worry, practice times are sporadic rather than continuous, and are limited to between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.) |
Sneakers
Sneakers is a 10-year-old rescue dog from Toronto. Part retriever, part Heinz57, Sneakers has been well trained to channel her energy. She is a friendly, happy dog, very good with people, but sadly not always great with other dogs. Please enquire about bringing your own pet; some dates will work better than others. A fenced enclosure is available on site, and outside of that, dogs must be kept on leash. Others From time to time, you may run across Vera's wife Tatiana, and/or their young adult twins. And of course occasionally other guests. |
Excellent experience at the grumpy professor’s place. The ‘grumpy’ professor was great for some interesting conversations too. The amenities were really nice and just as described. Our deal included the breakfast which we strongly recommend, as they went really above and beyond on the food. Great location, close to st. Peters Bay and Greenwich park. I like the eco-friendly vibes to the place as well. Highly recommended.

Grumpy professor? More like Awesome Professor & Company! The site was great! Upon our arrival, we were greeted promptly (I was lost and guided to the site by Vera), we were given the tour of the property and given so many options for our stay! The amenities were great and Richard, Vera and Sneakers were great hosts! I would definitely recommend The Grumpy Professor's North Shore Retreat to anyone looking for a North Shore camping experience!
